Raise Up the Hmong LGBTQ Narratives at Soul Friday!

Come kick back and have some fun with us at Soul Friday this Friday, March 1, 9pm at Hells Kitchen! Bring a friend(s)! 
Soul Friday is a Monthly dance party created for queer women of color and friends. Everyone is welcome! This month Soul Friday is supporting MWSMovement.com through their Community Give Back. We are working and organizing to ensure support, acceptance, safety, creative expression and education in our Hmong and larger community through an intersected social justice framework. Proceeds at the door, which is a $5 entrance fee, will be donated to our work.
 
In April, we’ll be heading to 16th Hmong National Development Conference in Fresno, Ca to outreach and organize inclusivity on Hmong LGBTQ justice. There will be over 1,000 attendees from all sectors of leadership, community, activism, academia, professionals, and elected officials. Soul Friday’s Community Give Back will support our efforts and ensure Hmong LGBTQ justice is part of the local and national narrative and the Hmong American Journey Forward.

Hmong Nation Development’s Conference Committee announced the Top 5 IMPACT Award this past Monday February 25, 2013 and we are excited that one our MWSM organizer, Linda Hawj has been selected as a recipient with other 4 Change Makers and Leaders. Thank you all for the support, outreach and votes!

The ceremony will take place at the 16th HND’s Conference – The Journey Forward: The Next Chapter of Hmong Americans, April 6. There will be over 1,000 attendees from all sectors of leadership, community, activism, academia, professionals, and elected officials.

Linda’s BIO:
Linda ‘Nkauj Xwb’ Hawj is a multi-disciplined Artist utilizing writing, poetry, spoken word, hip hop and filmmaking as forms of self-healing, empowerment, reflection, and to speak truths that are often silenced, marginalized or eliminated by oppressive systems. As an activist, she advocates for justice through multiple lens: gender, racial, reproductive, immigrant, refugee, and Hmong transgender and queer justice. In 2012, she was Minnesota’s St. Paul Field Organizer for President Obama’s Grassroots Campaign, and organized to defeat the MN Marriage and Voter ID Amendments.”

Rootscamp 2012 with New Organizing Institute!

With relentless efforts of fundraising and writing scholarship letters, Mari (left), Linda (middle), and Chong (right) were able to attend Rootscamp 2012 with NOI and meet various of great organizers from all across the U.S doing great organizing work. We all had a great experience learning from organizers from all over the US to debrief about 2012 Election and campaigns. We also made plans for next steps in organizing for 2013. Through the intense weekend, we were able to  take care of ourselves and enjoyed the beautiful sight of Washington D.C.

Guess what?!

MWSM canvassed at the  Hmong New Year this year at the MN River Center in St. Paul. We were able to canvass a 100 people with various opinions on Marriage Equality and other social issues. Check out some of the photos!

Another WONDERFUL DAY at MN UNITED – VOTE “NO” on the Marriage Amendment!

Over the weeks we will need over 500+ volunteers coming through the doors to help us really defeat this horrible [anti]marriage amendment! These are the folks who are ensuring that we keep our numbers up by making this defeat of the [anti]marriage amendment their own priority. 

These folks are the reason why we are truly going to defeat the marriage amendment.
